Message par Paul112 - Interview en anglais à traduire
Coucou Potomac, voici la fameuse interview. Merci d'avance : tu me rends un grand service ! Smile

    Dear Paul,

Apologies that this took such a long time, but here, finally, are the
    answers to your questions.

I'm enclosing a few sample pictures in case you want to illustrate the
article. Also enclosed is a more current picture of me.

Good luck with you fine site! Hope this is will help!

    All the best,

    Kari
    ________________________________________________________

 When and where were you born?

I was born in Espoo, suburban Helsinki, Finland, in 1973.

 Can you tell us a little about yourself? Of your youth? Your discovery
of the world of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse?

Well, like many cartoonists and writers I was a big comic book fan from
a very early age. I carry the badge of a "colossal nerd" with great
pride! Disney comics in particular are very popular here, and like many
Finns I learned to read from Aku Ankka (our DD weekly). I was hooked at
an early age. I still have the “Disneykins” little plastic figures I
    played with as a child!

 Tell us about your debut as a professional cartoonist and writer. Tell
    us your input at Disney.

After school I gave myself about a year to see if I could make it as a
professional cartoonist. I was fortunate enough to know a lot of people
in the business, having worked my school holidays at a comic book shop.
Quite quickly I got some work published. For example I wrote and drew a
detective strip for a local newspaper.

I started at Disney in 1993 after I met with Byron Erickson and Bob
Foster from Egmont in Helsinki. For a few years I wrote stories for
other, great artists like Vicar and the fantastic Branca, before making
the leap to full authorship, writing and drawing stories myself.

 Do you remember the first Disney comic you've read?

I well remember the first issue of the weekly magazine that arrived,
when my parent subscribed to Aku Ankka: it was 3/1978! It had a
terrific Paul Murry Mickey in it and the first part of Barks' classic
    “Tralla-la” story.

 Could you tell us what is your favorite character in the world of
Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, and why?

I do enjoy writing for Scrooge. I am a bit of a collector myself and
although my passion is old books, I can understand his fascination with
    money well.

Scrooge is a bit of a misunderstood romantic. He does not collect money
for the usual reasons – to buy nice things or to make your neighbour
    jealous. For Scrooge every coin is like a page in an exiting journal;
the key to a memory long since past. He is a relic from an era where the
world was still a large place and the men roaming it were considered
    heroes. I like that.

 What is the Disney story you wrote and you prefer?

Honestly, I can't choose. Old Vicar, when asked this question, would
always name the last three stories he had worked on, because he had a
hard time remembering the rest. I must be getting on in years, as I tend
to do the same – the more recent, the better. Also, artists seldom like
to look at stuff they've done years ago. We are a critical bunch when it
    comes to our own work.

 Before we can contact you, did you know Scrooge Wiki? If not, what do
you think of this site now?

No, I wasn't aware of it, and I am well impressed! It truly is the best
side of the social era we live in that sites like yours are created!
    Well done!

 Do you prefer Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck? Why ?

Donald, my old friend and boss, is my favourite of the two. Who doesn't
love the underdog? On the other hand Mickey adventures pre 1955
    (Walsh/Gottfreson) were stunning too.

 What is your favorite Disney author?

We really all are continuing in the giant footsteps of Carl Barks,
aren't we? It is thanks to him and the very flexible, easily adaptable
universe of Duckburg that he created that folks like me can keep doing
this job. Everyone else comes miles after Unca Carl.

 When you were little, what kind of comics did you read (Disney and
    no-Disney)?

Aside from the Disney already mentioned, I certainly knew the greats of
the French-Belgian scene well. Asterix, Iznogoud, Tintin, Lucky Luke,
etc. After Barks, I do believe Goscinny may have had the greatest impact
    on me as a child.

 What was your first job?

The very first? I had a paper route delivering advertisements for about
a second. All that exercise didn't suit me. The job at the comic book
store I mentioned earlier came next.

 Have you done any studies (if so, where, when, and why)?

Have I studied drawing or writing? No. Apart from the very great
instruction given by some art directors, most notably he fabulous
Fernando Guell at Egmont, I am self-taught.

 Outside of Disney, what are your favorite comics series?

Well, those childhood favourites mentioned earlier do remain after all
    these years!

The downside to doing what I do professionally is that I do not have the
time or the energy to follow the modern comics scene as much as I would
like. After 10 or so hours in the office the last thing you want to do
by way of relaxation is to pick up a comic book when you come home.

 With which of your colleagues Disney would you prefer to work?

I've been very lucky in that as I've always written more than I can
draw, I've had to great pleasure to have my stories drawn by almost all
the colleagues in the business. I have never written a story for the
Ramon Bernado, whom I consider a raving genius. I'd love to write a
    story for him.

Nowadays I draw almost all my stories, but earlier it was always a
pleasure and a great opportunity to learn when your story sketches were
sent to a talented guy. It was an opportunity to observe how his mind
worked; how he treated the story sketches he got, solved problems, etc.
The very best way to learn, I think.

 What are your plans for the future?

Oh, gods and other higher powers permitting, I'll keep doing this till
someone forces me to stop or they finally take my pencils away. I hope
    that never happens!

 How do you judge the work of Carl Barks and Don Rosa?

Barks we already discussed. I've always appreciated how in the tradition
of Disney comics, there has always been room for the artists' personal
style. It creates a varied field of artwork that caters for a large
audience. Don's stories were a perfect example of this. His popularity
was like a breath of fresh air to the whole genre!

 In your opinion, what are now the best writers (and designers) Disney
    today?

I've always had a great admiration for fantastic draftsmen. People like
Jippes, Bernado and many others put your average artist to shame. AND
make you try harder. That's what it's all about!
